Cleaning Gemstones, Semi-precious Stones and Sterling Silvers
To keep your
gemstones clean, you can use the following home-made solution:
Get one teaspoon of a gentle dishwashing liquid, one teaspoon of
household ammonia and one cup of warm water. Mix the three
ingredients to form a soapy solution. With a soft (the softest you
can find!) bristled toothbrush, slightly brush the gemstone to
loosen any dirt. You should not apply too much pressure as doing so
will make scratches more viable. After finishing the short brushing
of the gemstone, rinse it in a rubbing alcohol mixed with water
solution. You can simply pour a little bit of the rubbing alcohol
and water in a small paper cup so that it covers the jewelry piece
and swirl it around gently. After you’ve completed the rinse, take
care to dry it with a soft cloth. After drying with the cloth, let
it air dry on an absorbent paper towel (such as Bounty) for quite
some time so that it can be completely dried.
As with semi-precious stones, you should not use the above
ingredient, as it isn’t a good idea to soak it into any type of
cleaners. In cleaning a semi-precious gemstone, you should wipe it
clean with a damp soft cloth. After getting off any smudges or dirt,
dry it thoroughly with another clean soft (dry) cloth.
For sterling silver cleaning, only use cleaners that are designed
for it. However, if your sterling silver jewelry has other types of
jewelry on it (such as a stone set), using a polishing cloth would
be the best way to get it cleaned.
Remember, you shouldn’t use a home ultrasonic cleaner for any of
your gemstones as it can cause damages. You should also carefully
read the labels of any jewelry cleaning agent to see what they do
clean and how to use it as not all cleaning agents are good for all
types of jewelry. If you have any questions about how to clean a
specific piece of jewelry, you can just ask a trustworthy jeweler
for advice or tips!
