Preserving your jewelry

Jewelry has never been a friend of busy life things. As we wear our jewelry while doing household chores or running errands, it can only become filthier. Although we can’t protect jewelry from all the things we do, we can limit their exposure to certain things that we don’t have to wear jewelry doing. In order to keep your jewelry in tip-top shape, you should not expose it to any lotions, cosmetics, perfumes, hairspray and other hygienic products. Before using any products, you should remove your ring, earrings—whatever jewelry you have on—so that those hygienic chemicals won’t get on the jewelry. Many times, if these chemicals do get on jewelry, they’re difficult to remove and they will leave a dull residue. Remember, this includes any chemicals so they’re off limits when showering, bathing and swimming as well.

You should also remove your jewelry before settling down to any household chores. Jewelry can be easily damaged by house cleaning solutions and they can also be scratched easily against anything. Not only will taking off your jewelry before cleaning protect the jewelry, it will also keep you safer as well. You would not want your jewelry to be caught in any power tools as it could also cause you injury.

Keeping your jewelry away from excess heat or cold will also help preserve its shiny life. Exposing your jewelry to too much heat can cause multiple sorts of damage on it, including the loss of stones (by damaging the cement), damage “sensitive” jewelry such as pearls and marcasite as well as cause gemstone colors to fade. Having too cold temperatures will also cause damages such as fracturing of gemstones. With these temperature sensitive jewelry, it’s never a good idea to leave them in areas where they can be exposed to the extreme temperatures, such as on a heating vent.

Finally, although water can help keep your jewelry clean, it can also do damage on it. After exposing it water, you should ALWAYS dry the jewelry piece thoroughly. If water stays on the jewelry too long or is trapped on it for a lengthy time, it will tarnish silver as well as loosen the cement that used to hold stone settings together. Having too much moisture can also weaken springs and clasps on the jewelry.

By following these simple tips, your jewelry will be sure to keep its beauty for years to come.
