Properly using your jewelry box

When storing away your jewelry away for the night, the following tips will help make sure the jewelry box is put to good use in storing your jewelry. By properly putting away your jewelry in the jewelry box, it will less likely become damaged.

First of all, each jewelry piece should have its own space in your jewelry box. This will prevent the jewelry from scratching each other, as metal will scratch other metals. To do so, you can get a jewelry box that offers separate compartments. If your jewelry box doesn’t have many compartments, you can just use separate containers for each jewelry piece before putting them away in your jewelry box. Many times, small, sealable plastic pouches will do the trick. Also be aware that gemstones will be able to scratch each other and their luster can be destroyed if it comes into contact with metals. Therefore, it’s quite important you keep the two (and the rest of your jewelry) separate so they don’t “bother” each other.

For necklaces and bracelets, try to have them hung on hooks in a jewelry box or armoire that offers it. If there are no hooks, you should still keep the clasps fastened to avoid entanglement of the jewelry.

In any case, before you put that jewelry away in the jewelry box, you should make sure it’s DRY! This is very vital to keeping your jewelry safe in its jewelry box. Even if stored away properly, if the piece of jewelry has water on it, damages can occur such as loosened cement on stone settings or tarnishing of silvers.

By following this guide in storing your jewelry, not only will your jewelry be kept safe, you’ll also be using your jewelry box to its best advantage.
